Arizona governor suspends Uber's ability to test self-driving cars
The decision to block Uber Technologies Inc's is a blow to the ride-hailing company, which sees its future success reliant on driverless vehicles, and trails competitors such as Alphabet Inc's Waymo in developing the technology.

Arizona had been a key hub for Uber, with about half of the company's 200 self-driving cars and a staff of hundreds.

Police and safety regulators are investigating the March 18 fatality in which a woman crossing a four-lane road at night was struck and killed by an Uber self-driving SUV.

The governor of Arizona on Monday suspended Uber's ability to test self-driving cars on public roads in the state following a fatal crash last week that killed a 49-year-old pedestrian.

In a letter sent to Uber Chief Executive Dara Khosrowshahi and shared with the media, Governor Doug Ducey said he found a video released by police of the crash "disturbing and alarming, and it raises many questions about the ability of Uber to continue testing in Arizona."

Police and safety regulators are investigating the March 18 fatality in which a woman crossing a four-lane road at night was struck and killed by an Uber self-driving SUV. The incident has focused new attention on the lack of clear safety standards for such vehicles.

Ducey called the crash "an unquestionable failure."

"In the best interests of the people of my state, I have directed the Arizona Department of Transportation to suspend Uber's ability to test and operate autonomous vehicles on Arizona's public roadways," Ducey said.

The letter strikes a dramatically different tone from late 2016, when Ducey invited Uber to his state with celebration, saying "Arizona welcomes Uber self-driving cars with open arms and wide open roads." At the time, a banner was hung on a building in Phoenix welcoming Uber.

Uber moved its driverless cars to Arizona from San Francisco after California regulators shut down the self-driving fleet for not having the proper permits.

Uber, which had already pulled its self-driving cars off the road after the accident, said in a statement on Monday that it will "keep a dialogue open with the Governor's office to address any concerns they have."
Huawei Mate RS Porsche Design available for pre-order in the UK

The Huawei Mate RS Porsche Design is a beautiful phone – some like it better than the P20 Pro that it was based on what with the lack of a notch and the addition of an under display fingerprint reader. But beauty comes at a price, specifically a high one.

Clove UK has started taking pre-orders at £1,692. As you can probably tell, this is for the reasonable 256 GB version, the 512 GB one is not available (which would be over £2,000)

And it’s only coming in Black, the Red version is exclusive to China. Units will be available in two weeks (starting after April 23). Note that Porsche-Design.com says units will be available in May. It’s priced €1,550, so it’s cheaper (by about one mid-range Android phone).

Xiaomi Comet and Sirius phones may have Always On OLED screens, Snapdragon 710

The industrious folks over at XDA-Developers have dug up info on two upcoming Xiaomi phones code named Comet and Sirius. And they will use a Snapdragon 710 chipset – part of Qualcomm’s AI-focused 700 series – that appears to be a rebranded Snapdragon 670.

The two phones are mostly the same. Both have OLED screens with Always On Display, both run Android 8.1 Oreo with MIUI, both are dual-SIM phones with 3,100 mAh battery (or so), an IR blaster but no NFC.

The major difference between them is that the Sirius model is set to have a notch on its screen and its selfie camera will offer portrait mode. Resolutions of any of the screens and cameras are unknown.

As mentioned, both will use the same chipset, which has an octa-core processor with two Kryo cores (based on Cortex-A75) and six more cores (based on A55). The performanceseems to between a Snapdragon 660 and the flagship 845.
